MCS is a leader in developing cutting-edge geospatial tools that support integrating a wide array of data to support decision-making by a broad range of audiences around these themes. Users of these tools range from smallholder farmers, to protected area managers, to national governments, to intergovernmental organizations. As part of MCS, the Scientific Programmer will support the development of new and existing geospatial technical tools targeting these audiences, and be the primary person responsible for the everyday management and maintenance of these tools. The programmer will be directly involved in initiatives including Trends.Earth (addressing land degradation), the Resilience Atlas, the Living Carbon Reserves Atlas (preserving irrecoverable carbon), and Spatial Planning for Area Conservation in Response to Climate Change (SPARC). The Scientific Programmer will be a key contributor in building an innovative, high impact platform drawing on the strengths of these various tools while adding the additional functionalities needed to enable MCS Science to reach a broader audience.We are looking for someone who is passionate about the environment and our planet and is excited by the opportunity to help develop geospatial tools and cutting edge technology that support sustainable development while protecting biodiversity, and human wellbeing.


  • Developing user interface improvements within CI tools to enhance usability
  • Optimize backend features of CI tools to enhance functionality
  • Maintain and develop improved user interfaces for web and desktop-based tools (e.g. QGIS plugin)
  • Upgrade and maintain Amazon EC2 instances supporting websites and tools of the Moore Center for Science
  • Streamline security updates and upgrades in tools and servers



  • Bachelor’s degree or up to four years of college level work in computer science or data science and 4-6 years work experience
  • Knowledge of open source geospatial software (e.g. QGIS/CartoDB/PostGIS), and cloud computing platforms (e.g. GEE/AWS/GCS/Azure), including open source deployment frameworks and continuous integration
  • Database design and management experience
  • Experience communicating technical concepts to non-expert audiences
  • Knowledge of UI/UX design
  • Fluency in Python, Javascript, R, R Shiny Apps, Leaflet and PostgreSQL, experience with Ruby a plus


  • Experience building tools for decision-making and prioritization in conservation
  • Demonstrated experience supporting open source software development
  • Experience working in Google Earth Engine and with Google Cloud Functions/AWS Lambda
  • Proficiency in Spanish
