About Joel:

CURRENTLY a freelance geospatial consultant working on open data mapping and wildlife survey data projects.

PREVIOUSLY worked at Vulcan Inc. as a GIS developer for conservation projects. Based in WA state where I live with my wife Carol, who earned a PhD on human-wildlife interactions.

PREVIOUSLY employed by Wildlife Conservation Society as the DR Congo program's GIS Coordinator. I spent 3 years working in Ituri forest in northeastern DRC's Okapi Wildlife Reserve. I built capacity for conservation actors to use GIS for biological monitoring, law-enforcement monitoring, socioeconomic assessment, and land-use planning. I also developed species distribution models and deforestation models, which contributed to land-use planning procedures. Finally, my work brought me towards assessing implementation of international best practices in the DRC's mining sector.

EDUCATED at Clark University (MA) and James Madison Univ (VA) in GIScience.

GEOGRAPHIC experience includes: USA, DR Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Republic of Congo, and the Philippines.

LANGUAGES: English & Fran├žais (un petit peu)
